R.Garcia – “I Used to Write on Walls & Other New York City Stories” ep [SLOTH004]
“R.Garcia is quite the prodigious and versatile musician. Like a shark who must keep swimming to keep on living. Randy Garcia seems to have a similar relationship with writing, playing, & recording music. After releasing countless classic IDM solo albums over the past 10 years er so, and more recently a couple of solid post rock records with his band “The Nerd Parade“. R.Garcia now offers Hairy Sloth Records this wonderful 10 song EP to share with the w3rld like only we can. This a cannon blast of an EP which appears to be amalgamation of many of Mr. Garcia’s collective styles, w3rks, and experiences. An album like this may get recorded in a relatively short time per say, but it is more so the product of years of dedication and the exploration of many creative auditory aRt foRmz. Never one satisfied to languish in any one stylistic comfort zone for too long, R.Garcia has proven to be one of the more chameleonic contemporary sound-smiths working in any American rock or electronic scene today. Wether rocking a guitar, arpeggiating a synth, or tantalizing us with tracking software.. the result is usually the same. -Powerful yet delicate & inventive music filled with contagiously positive energy, and some of the catchiest melodies this side of the North Pole.
“I Used to Write on Walls & Other New York City Stories” was written by Randy for an off-broadway play of a similar title and while he was spending some time in the Big Apple. The energy of the “hive” buzzing and pinging shines through these songs like glowing embers. Especially the melodies, which are as poignant, pregnant, and perfect as ever here. The blend of guitar, software, live instrumentation, and homegrown ingenuity forms a cohesive sound that is as pleasing to the heART as it is to the ear.
We’re pleased as punch that an artist like R.Garcia is out there making records, and even more so that he’s decided to release one with us. Hopefully it won’t be the last, and maybe next time even a full length joint. Though he’s been diversifying he talents a bit more lately, it doesn’t appear that Randy will be retiring from song-smithing’ any time soon. HSR are and will remain to be huge fans. Always looking forward to hearing what Mr. “R” Garcia will do next.”
