Album Review: R.Garcia’s – “I Used To Write On Walls..”

rg_sloth04_album_art_front_300_lr

R.Garcia’s masterful mega EP, “I Used To Write On Walls & Other New York City Stories”, just got some much deserved positive online press in the form of a brief album review.  He was gracious enough to offer this EP up to the w3rld through our humble lil net label here at Hairy Sloth earlier this year, and it just got a pretty solid review from Canadian MP3 Blog – “QRO”.   Tis truly awesome to know that HSR, it’s contributing artists, and our collective music is really starting to sprinkle some fertile “seeds” domestically and in foreign lands even.  We’re only about a year old now and on a shoestring budget, but with artists of Mr. Garcia’s caliber, with releases like “I Used To Write On Walls..”, and with the likes of and bodies of w3rk n’ potential from the rest of our roster.. -the sky really is the limit. In 2010 we’re takin’ this whole thang through the roof. Stay tuned, as we’ve got some special stuff coming down the pike in the coming months.

And again, Mr. Garcia, *Stellar job on a a ridiculously solid EP and congrats on the positive cross-continental review of your album.  We’re honored to be able to host and disseminate it for ya.  Carry on hombre, we know you most assuredly shall.  You’re a continued artistic inspiration. -Nothin’ but Love and Respect for you and your prolific piles of w3rk good sir.

Sincerely – gaR BaiLey aka alGARhythm
President, CEO, and Head Janitor of Hairy Sloth Records

End Of Summer Updates / State Of Our Unions

Greetings and Salutations Music Lovers!

We wanted to update you all on what’s been going on in “Hairy Sloth w3rld” as of late.  Lots of new website features and fresh content to celebrate.  *Plus there’s plenty more to look forward to over the coming months and into 2010 as well.  Let’s  get caught up to speed here…

-> Firstly, in case you hadn’t noticed, the long awaited and over due HSR Compilation is now completed, converted, cohort-ed, uploaded and available for all your listening pleasures.  Entitled: Hairy Sloth Records – “The Central FLaw In Us All Compilation – Vol. 1″.  *It’s currently available for digital download over on HSR for a mere 5$, and in our humble opinion it’s worth every penny.  (Note: ALL proceeds from the sale of this album goes towards further promoting the label, artists, and compilation.) Besides that, every OTHER musical item available on HSR up to this point in time is available for FREE download, with an option to donate if one so chooses.

So you’re probably interested in just who exactly is included on our first Compilation..
Well here’s the track listing to hopefully wet yer whistles and maybe inspire your more philanthropic natures in the process:

Not too shabby, eh? Tis really a solid listen, start to finish.  Props to all the comp artists for sharing their special muzaks with us all ie for their auditory generosity, and for their trust in this new venture and young label.

-> Secondly, This Summer we released two more EPs to our catalog by the artists: “R.Garcia” + “Benny Loco & Uncle Abuelito”. This brings our current catalog collection to 5 EPs and one glorious Compilation with more on the way in the coming months. Looking to try and release full lengths by A_Scissors, alGARhythm, & Drone Operator by the end of the year, and we have some other irons in the fire as well.

-> Thirdly, Besides the website/label updates which include a new faster server, a new secure cash register feature, and a “shop” section.. we’ve got this new area of the site called “Detritus”. This is a blog styled section of the site where we’ll be offering strictly FREE downloads of individual MP3s, Video, Photos, and any other content we feel worth offering up to our friends, fans, and customers. The idea behind this section of the website is to supplement time between major album and EP releases, as those can’t happen every single month. We’re hoping that by offering up free tracks and other tidbits n’ sundries every few weeks er so, many of them exclusive to HSR.. -That we’ll be able to generate a bit more regular and return traffic to the label. I mean, who doesn’t love exclusive and Free songs and videos? Right now, there’s a 12 minute Death To False Love MP3 and 2 brand new songs by Benny Loco up on/in Detritus that you’ll find no where else on earth. Go Download those joints now, along with the other EPs.  There’s plenty of fresh content for everybody.  Hope you dig and enjoy it all.

Lastly but not leastly, We’ll be doing an Avant GARism event on Oct 16th at the Laboratory in Gainesville, Florida, and simultaneously helping to kick off the “Solder VI: Electronic Music Festival”. -Which many of u are well aware is happening the very same weekend! Mad thanx to “Minimum Of None” for helping to set this up, and who will also be playing the event along side alGARhythm and A_Scissors. Both of whom will be playing many of their new, unreleased tracks that you won’t be hearing until a few months from  now when their new LPs drop like bombs on here at HSR.  Please come check out the show if in the Gainesville area, and be some of the very few folks who get’s to hear their new music before the rest of the w3rld does. Gar’s also got a special surprise for everybody during his set which has never quite been attempted before. Fingers crossed that he can pull it off.

Well that’s it for now.. Plenty of stuff here to get any interested parties up to date and informed on Hairy Sloth Records’ and it’s label mates recent output and endeavors.

Feel free to let us know any feedback you may have on any of the information or releases listed above. Always interested to know what ourcustomers, patrons, and creative contemporaries are thinkin’ and feelin’ bout our w3rks and just in general.

Love, respect, creativity, and understanding to all – Tha Hairy SLoTH Crew

PS – We’re also working now on getting many of our releases available in physical CD formats too. As well as some artist and label apparel ie shirts, hats, hoodies, stickers, etc. Will def let u know if any of that comes to fruition.

HSR Compilation #1 is on the way…

That’s right chikadoo’s.  She is’a perch’d and read-eYe to come on down the pike.  Soon as me and my webmaster get this new shopping cart and server space set up proper she’ll be comin at’cha!  And sure we thought this wonderful compilation of some Florida’s finest underground electronic, ambient, and experimental artist would be out a bit sooner but hey..

better late than never.

Upon hearing this 15 song/12 artist  collection of specialized music, which was curated by yours truly, Senor Gar BaiLey.  We here at H. Sloth Records firmly believe that you’ll find it was well worth the wait.  We couldn’t have hoped for better start to this compilation series.

I’d like to say we’ll try and release one of these annually or even bi-annually, but that’s gonna depend on a multitude of variables in the coming years.  However, please do not fret as this definitely will not be the last Hairy Sloth Compilation that is produced.

Big ups and uber duper appreciation for all the wonderful artists who donated and contributed music to this treasure trove of DIY goodness.  They make it what it is.  I tell ya, as good as this compilation is.. it’s really just the tip of the iceberg baby.  Look for full Lengths albums and EPs by many of these same artists over the next year.  -(Brand new and archival.)

Below are the front and back covers with the artists and track listings included to help wet your whistle till this thing is up and available later this week…

Oh yeah.. it’s on now!

*See you soon with a big bundle of auditory gold for one and for all…

Peas n’ Carrots – gaR B. aka alGARhythm

[SLOTH004] R.Garcia – “I Used To Write On Walls..” ep

R.Garcia – “I Used to Write on Walls & Other New York City Stories” ep [SLOTH004]

R.Garcia is quite the prodigious and versatile musician.  Like a shark who must keep swimming to keep on living.  Randy Garcia seems to have a similar relationship with writing, playing, & recording music. After releasing countless classic IDM solo albums over the past 10 years er so, and more recently a couple of solid post rock records with his band “The Nerd Parade“.  R.Garcia now offers Hairy Sloth Records this wonderful 10 song EP to share with the w3rld like only we can.  This a cannon blast of an EP which appears to be amalgamation of many of Mr. Garcia’s collective styles, w3rks, and experiences.  An album like this may get recorded in a relatively short time per say, but it is more so the product of years of dedication and the exploration of many creative auditory aRt foRmz.  Never one satisfied to languish in any one stylistic comfort zone for too long, R.Garcia has proven to be one of the more chameleonic contemporary sound-smiths working in any American rock or electronic scene today.  Wether rocking a guitar, arpeggiating a synth, or tantalizing us with tracking software.. the result is usually the same.  -Powerful yet delicate & inventive music filled with contagiously positive energy, and some of the catchiest melodies this side of the North Pole.

I Used to Write on Walls & Other New York City Stories” was written by Randy for an off-broadway play of a similar title and while he was spending some time in the Big Apple.  The energy of the “hive” buzzing and pinging shines through these songs like glowing embers.  Especially the melodies, which are as poignant, pregnant, and perfect as ever here.  The blend of guitar, software, live instrumentation, and homegrown ingenuity forms a cohesive sound that is as pleasing to the heART as it is to the ear.

We’re pleased as punch that an artist like R.Garcia is out there making records, and even more so that he’s decided to release one with us.  Hopefully it won’t be the last, and maybe next time even a full length joint.  Though he’s been diversifying he talents a bit more lately, it doesn’t appear that Randy will be retiring from song-smithing’ any time soon.  HSR are and will remain to be huge fans.  Always looking forward to hearing what Mr. “R” Garcia will do next.”

mad love & respeKt – gaR Bailey aka alGARhythm / June 8th, 2009

Interview: A_Scissors (also w/ show review)

There’ a cool little interview with A_Scissors over on the Metromix website.  Props to Miriam Lorenzi for making that happen.  There’s also some positive feedback on Hairy Sloth Records and performance review included.

Long Live A_Scissors!

Stay tuned folks.  More Hairy Sloth Artist and release news coming soon.

Much love – gaR B.

1st Release: A_Scissors – “Faster” [SLOTH001]

A_Scissors – “Faster” ep [SLOTH001]

“The tall, slender, sultry, and supple descriptions of the artist known as A_Scissors.  Can just as easily apply to his music, as it applies to his person and persona.  This is a modern musician who’s found a way to accurately transpose his own wonderful sense and way of being into his carefully crafted sounds.   His music delivers a consistent dichotomy of opposing attributes.  On one side, there’s a delicate aura of the precious, the beautiful, the pure.. the graceful.  On the other end, there’s some definite angsty superlatives of sound, which one could use to describe the vibe.  -Directness, defiance, & subversion all contrast and coexist with many of the kinder, softer modes and means of Mr. Scissors’s musical expressions.

These aesthetic properties have never been more apparent, in my opinion, than on his latest release, “Faster“.  Which Hairy Sloth Records is truly honored to have as the first official release.  Please head over to our “Music” section and download this future classic of contemporary electronic music.  It’s a true gem created by a real artist.”
