BIO/AESTHETIC:
alGARhythm is the moniker of a strange and multifaceted individualist from the Southeastern US. Matthew “Gar” Bailey, aka alGARhythm, was born November 16th, 1975 in Orlando, FL. A self proclaimed, “Neo-Dada Maximalist” and “Shamanic Fig as an Embodiment of Sound”. alGARhythm works in an area of live analog electronics, sound collage, bent circuitry, & effectual processing that borders on performance art as near as it borders on experimental IDM or leftfield electronics.
alGARhythm prefers to “w3rk” with midi-synced hardware, real time sound manipulation, and limited sequencing. Gar expresses social irony and it underlying folly/beauty dichotomy though the juxtaposition of conscious and unconscious sound and then the contrasting of many auditory concepts into his albums and performances. By building with blocks of interchangeable parts, alGARhythm creates an odd cohesion of purposefulness and chance.
Endlessly, unfurling sounds roll out of and into each other. Organized compositions hold hands with improvisation. The synchronization of midi, cyclical percussion, mathless melodies, contorted vocals, raucous riffage, and galvanizing glitches all add to the cornucopia of the musical moment. Gar finds samples and sounds from everywhere and from almost anything. A vast amount of these sonic selections come from the auditory detritus of a modern society that surrounds us all.. Such as: TV’s, CB’s, records, tapes, radio frequencies, nature, people, cities, machines, animals, etc.
alGARhythm exhibits a genuine interest in the human experience, and how to reflect that with his music and collage. Suitable descriptions of his unique sound might range from: -”Art Brut Beat Collage” to “Neo-DaDa MuzaK” to “Post Punk Electronic” to “Organic Maximalist Drum Machine Art” to “A Knob Box Cornucopia of Continuous Fluctuation & Exploration”.
HISTORY:
After spending much of the 90’s and early 00’s playing in different more traditional post rock/experimental bands, Gar decided to start exploring new genre’s and go it alone. -Recruited some fresh musical robots and started w3rking solo with all his shiny new tools. alGARhythm’s original lo-fi, bedroom IDM album: – “The South Pole on Fire” was self released online in late 2003, and by 2005-06, alGARhythm was fully immersed in to formulating original processes of recording and performing his own unique “experiments” in sound, and he was also picking up interest from an independent Central, FL upstart label called, Polyvibe Records. Many of his 2006 recordings would become the basis of his 2nd solo album on Polyvibe . In January of 2007, alGARhythm released that album: “Reinventing the Orange” to a mostly positive listener and critical response. 2007 and most 2008 were spent promoting the album and playing shows in support of it. Mr. Bailey also started a promotional group called, “Avant GARism”. For putting on shows in the Central FL area, and to give other up and coming underground musicians opportunities on the stage as well.
In August 0f 2008. *alGARhythm BaiLey started his own independent net label called: Hairy Sloth Records. Which offers listeners free digital versions of much of it’s music along with more traditional formats. So far the label, and one of Gar’s proudest achievements, has released 5 EPs, A stellar Compilation of FL electronic artist, and a bunch of exclusive individual songs in it’s “Detritus” section. One of those original 5 Hairy Sloth EPs was the super solid 6 song EP: alGARhythm – “Additional Oranges” (Recorded in: 2006 | released in: 2009). By the end of 2010, expect another handful of future classics to be added to the HSR catalog.
alGARhythm is currently writing and recording his 3rd solo album to be released in Summer/Fall 2010 on HSR. He’s also rehearsing a new stage presentation and performance which will involve many updated elements of the visual and auditory functions which has helped make Gar Bailey aka alGARhythm such a well rounded artist/musician and performer.
A tour the South Eastern US with A_Scissors is in the works for July and August 2010. Woo-Hoo!
